Aurora Hills students will have two exciting opportunities to participate in district and statewide math competitions in April 2010.
First, on Friday, April 9, 2010, Ahills will be holding its annual 24 Championship Tournament. 24 is a mental math card game that combines finely honed operational skills with ninja-like deftness and warp-like speed. All students are eligible to compete for one of 24 selective spots offered at each grade level. The top four mathematicians from our school will represent Ahills at the district tournament on Friday, April 23, 2010. Prizes given at the school and district competitions include (but are not limited to): certificates of participation, candy, medals, trophies, t-shirts, food vouchers, a 24 game of their own, graphing calculators and cold, hard CASH.
The second event is the 27th annual Math Olympiad competition at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs on Friday, April 23, 2010. Last year we cancelled our participation due to snow closures, but we look forward to clear skies this year! Participants will compete with students from all over Colorado and surrounding states in a 4 hour, 5 problem, essay style test. College scholarships are awarded to the top three competitors. A campus tour, a visit to a college level math class, a peek in the dorms, and a day in the life of a college student are also on the agenda. This is a great opportunity for Ahills students to be exposed to the college setting and get them thinking about their own future. All students are welcome to attend, but bus seats will be given on a first come, first served basis, with students attending practice sessions on a regular basis being given an automatic spot.
24 Club and Math Olympiad meet every other week in room 218 until 3:30pm. Students can listen to announcements for practice days, or you can call 303-326-4687 to hear them on my voicemail message as well.
