Nurse

Health Services at Aurora Hills Middle School

As the school nurse, I am here to address the health needs of all students at our school. Please use this as a resource for common health forms and other resources that may be needed for the school year. My primary goal is to help keep your students healthy and safe so they can stay in the classroom, learning. Please read this "How Sick is too Sick" web page to determine if you should send your student to school.

Students are required to have a pass or be escorted by a staff member to come to the health office. Students may not come to the health office during passing periods, they must go to their classroom first to obtain a pass.

Important Note:

If your student needs to go home due to illness or injury, you will receive a call from the nurse or another staff member. The cell phone policy here at Aurora Hills Middle School requires students to have their phones locked in their yonder pouch for the entire school day; you should not be receiving a call from your student asking to be picked up due to illness.

Immunizations

As you prepare for your student's entry into middle school, you must provide written proof of childhood immunizations against vaccine-preventable diseases, these must be up-to-date as required by Colorado state law (C.R.S. #25-4-900). In middle school the Tdap vaccine is required at the entry of 6th grade. If you receive a letter stating that your student's immunization record is not compliant, please take care of it ASAP. Do not wait until the last minute to obtain these important shots. There are opportunities to receive immunizations free of charge or at a reduced rate. Please visit the Arapahoe County Health Department website to learn more.

If you have personal or religious exemptions, please visit the CDPHE website regarding non-medical exemptions and follow the instructions.

Medications/Medical Forms

The following guidelines shall also pertain to the administration of medication to students in the school setting:

Rescue/Emergency Medications

Rescue medications should be kept in the clinic unless written permission for a student to carry these prescription drugs and has been agreed to by the physician, parent, and school nurse. It requires, in part, that the student has demonstrated the necessary maturity to keep it on them.

Prescription and Over the Counter Medications

Prescription and over the counter medications require written permission for administration in the school setting from both a healthcare provider and a parent/guardian. For prescription medications, most pharmacies can provide an extra labeled container so that a prescription can be divided and placed in a properly labeled container for school use. For over-the-counter medication, please provide the medication in the labeled box or container. If the dose or the directions change, a new form/container must be submitted. Our district does provide a limited selection of over-the-counter medications to students if parent/guardian permission is given in Infinite Campus. At Aurora HIlls Middle School, we do not allow students to carry their own prescription or over-the-counter medications.

Vision and Hearing

All 7th grade students, students with IEPs and any students new to the district will be screened for vision and hearing during the school year. If you choose to opt-out of any screenings, please contact the school nurse ASAP.

Please feel free to contact the Health Office with any updates to your child's health needs or with any questions.
